Lifebuoy takes Dettol to HC by announcement

BENGALURU: In what is the first coronavirus-related IP case in India, two FMCG giants have horns locked up in the Bombay High Court. Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has dragged Reckitt Benckiser (RB) to the HC, accusing the Dettol maker of neglecting the soap.

Demand for disinfectants, soaps, and disinfectants skyrocketed last month as the coronavirus spread, as one of the best suggested remedies is to wash your hands properly. HUL said RB's ad promoting such bar soaps was not as effective when used for handwashing. He argued that Dettol's handwash ad belittled Lifebuoy by displaying soap with the same shape, configuration, and color as HUL's registered Lifebuoy red bar. HUL has reportedly sought Rs 1 crore in damages and a standing court order against the ad. HUL did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
