Automakers see a massive drop in sales in March due to the BS-VI blockade and transition

NEW DELHI: The country's top automakers, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) and Hyundai Motor reported a sharp drop in sales in March as the COVID-19 transition and crash affected shipments.

Tata Motors, Mahindra&mahindra(m&m)andtoyotakirloskarmotor(tkm)alsoreportedadouble-digitdeclineindomesticsaleslastmonth.

mini-carsalescomprisingaltoandwagonrinmarch2020were15,988unitscomparedto16,826unitsinthesamemonthlastyear,down5%.

similarly,salesofthecompactsegment,includingmodelslikeswift,celerio,ignis,baleno,anddzire,fell50.9percentto40,519units,upfrom82,532carsinmarch2019.

utilityvehiclesales,includingvitarabrezza,s-crossandertiga,alsodeclined53.4percentto11,904unitsinmarch.

hyundaimotorindiareporteda40.69percentdecreaseindomesticsaleslastmonthto26,300units,comparedto44,350unitsinmarch2019.
