Brazilian Bolsonaro again says concern about coronavirus is exaggerated
RIO DE JANEIRO: The president stuck with his statement on Tuesday that concern about the new is exaggerated, and accused the Brazilian media of trying to stoke hysteria at the national level.
Bolsonaro said in a nationally televised speech that the media had seized the death toll in Italy, which he says is suffering so severely due to its aging population and colder weather.
They arrived, we are facing it and it will happen soon. Our lives have to continue, the jobs must be maintained, said the president.
Bolsonaro added that certain Brazilian states should abandon their scorched earth policy of banning public transportation, closing businesses and schools, and calling for mass confinement in the home of their residents.
He said that people should be extremely concerned about transmitting the virus to others, particularly parents and grandparents.
As he spoke, some Brazilians who are at home in self-isolation protested what they see as their attitude of rejection of the pandemic by leaning from their windows to hit pots and pans.
Bolsonaro has come under fire, initially for referring to the virus that causes the disease COVID-19 as a fantasy and later, when authorities, including his own health ministry, instructed people to avoid the meetings, for going to a demonstration on the 15th March where he shook supporters hands. On March 20, Covid-19 called a small flu.
About 2,200 people have been infected so far, with 46 dead.
For most people, the virus only causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more serious illnesses, like pneumonia and death. The vast majority of people recover.
Bolsonaro traveled to the United States earlier this month and met with the president. Donald trump . Since then, approximately two dozen members of Bolsonaro's delegation have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to local media reports.
Bolsonaro has said he tested negative for the virus.
In my particular case, with my track record as an athlete, if I were infected with the virus, I wouldn't have to worry, Bolsonaro said in the speech on Tuesday. I wouldn't feel anything or, if it affected me much, it would be like a little flu or a little cold.
After the speech, the head of the Brazilian Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, said that the country requires serious and responsible leadership and that now is not the time to attack the press or other public officials. Alcolumbre is isolated at home, having been diagnosed with the virus.
We consider serious the position expressed today by the president, in the national networks, to attack the containment measures of COVID-19, said Alcolumbre. The position goes against the actions taken by other countries and suggested by the World Health Organization .
