Thane: a couple commits suicide after killing a child

THANE: A couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging after killing their youngest daughter in Thane district, police said Monday.

In an alleged suicide note found on the mobile phone of one of the deceased, the couple alleged that their family members harassed them for what they decided to take the extreme step, police said.

A relative of the couple alerted the police about the incident in the early hours of Monday.

Then, the police ran to the couple's house in the town of Vaklan and found them and their son hanging from the ceiling, said the inspector of the Shil Daighar police station, R K Mohite.

The deceased has been identified as Shivram Patil (44), his wife Deepika (42) and his daughter Anushka, four years old.

Patil worked in a rice mill in the town. The preliminary investigation indicates that the couple may have taken an extreme step due to domestic disputes, he said.

The couple first hung up the child and then committed suicide. A WhatsApp suicide note was also found and is being verified. In the note, dated March 1, the couple said their relatives were harassing them and, therefore, decided to commit suicide, Mohite said.

In the suicide note, signed by Shivram Patil and Deepika, the couple demanded strict punishment for 13 family members whom they named in the text, he said.

The official said Shivram Patil also mentioned in the note that his properties would be handed over to Deepika's brother, who in turn should donate them to an orphanage.

Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone I) S S Burse told PTI that a caller alerted police about the deaths at 1 a.m. on Monday.

The statements of those named in the suicide note will be recorded and additional measures will be taken accordingly, he said.

He added that a murder case would be recorded against Shivram Patil and his wife for killing their son.
