Mumbai hotelier commits suicide, son near native Udupi

MUMBAI :, a 52-year-old hotelier, committed suicide with his six-year-old son during a trip to his hometown near Udupi. The bodies of the father and son duo that disappeared from the Bridge on February 16 arrived at the beach on Friday at Mattu Beach in Katapady.

Rai, 52, ran Leena Restaurant and Bar in Dadar, a popular and old orchestra bar. The exit closed on Saturday with a note of sympathy attached to the door. Neighbors said Rai was a devotee and visited the temple every year, buying new bags and paraphernalia at adjacent stores. Rai lived on Mira Road and also had commercial interests.

He was originally from Bantwal in the district. He and his son Aneesh traveled to his hometown for a religious function at his wife's house fifteen days ago. However, wife Ashwini did not accompany them. On February 16, the hotelier took his son and left the place early in the morning, even while the ceremony was underway.

Later, his abandoned car was found near the Nethravati Bridge and a suicide note was recovered from the vehicle, which said they were jumping into the river. The police had conducted search operations on the river for five days without result.

The decomposed remains were identified by Rai's brother, Harish and Ashwini, who traveled to Udupi after police informed them of the recovery.

On Saturday, the autopsies were completed at the morgue of the Ajjarkadu civil hospital and delivered to the Kapu police station. The family took over there and went to the last rites.

Gopalkrishna's brother, Harish, who also works in Mumbai, said: We can't understand why he got so depressed. He had no problems within the family. He came to his wife's house for the show and suddenly decided to jump off the bridge. Surprised and hurt by losing her husband and son. We are comforting her. We will return to Mumbai after completing all the rituals 20-25 days later.
