Although police personnel were retired, including those taken from the Armed Reserve, a team posted nearby, in charge of providing security to the late Prime Minister J Jayalalithaa Veda Nilayam's residence - would cover the actor's house during his routine patrol in the neighborhood.

Rajinikanth lives at upscale Poes Garden here, which is a just a stone's throw from the former 's house.

After the actor's statements last month about a demonstration carried out by social reformer EV Ramasamy Periyar in 1971 led to a dispute, police security was provided to his residence since some Dravidian teams had said they would hold protests in front of his House.

We had a meeting with the actor on Saturday. Rajinikanth said he felt there was no need for police security. We reviewed the situation and the security has been withdrawn, a senior police official told PTI.

However, the actor's residence would be covered during patrolling, the official added.

On January 14, taking part in an event held here by Tamil magazine 'Thuglak' Rajinikanth alleged: In 1971, at Salem, Periyar took out a rally in which the undressed images of Lord Sriramachandra Moorthy and Sita -with a garland of sandal- featured.

Except for the comments, (DVK) accused the actor of pronouncing a blatant lie and demanded his unconditional apology and also filed police complaints seeking actions against him.

Later, and DVK staged a Besiege Rajinikanth 's house protest here against the actor.

They were arrested by the police, but then they were allowed to go to the actor's house.

The actor, however, remained firm in his comments, maintaining that they were real and refused to apologize as required by the Dravidian ensembles.
