The latest on the spread of coronavirus in China and beyond

NEW DELHI: The death toll from the new figure rose to 361 on Monday, after the Philippines reported Sunday of the first death outside of China. The outbreak has affected more than 17,300 people worldwide. In India, on Sunday a second case of a new coronavirus was detected in Kerala.

Here are the latest developments in the propagation of the coronavirus.

Toll touches 361, 17,025 confirmed cases

The total number of deaths from a coronavirus epidemic in China increased to 361 as of Sunday, 57 more than the previous day, the National Health Commission said. The number of new infections confirmed in China increased by 2,829 on Sunday, bringing the total to 17,205.


First death reported from outside China in the Philippines

The first death outside of China was reported on Sunday: a 44-year-old Chinese man who died in the Philippines after traveling there from Wuhan. At least 171 other cases have been reported in Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, Spain, Thailand, the United States and 14 other countries and regions outside of mainland China.


WHO declares emergency public health outbreak of international concern

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern. Chinese data suggest that the virus is less deadly than the 2002-03 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which killed nearly 800 of the 8,000 people it infected.


Several countries suspend travel to and from China

Global airlines have suspended or reduced direct flights to major cities in China. Several countries have denied entry to foreign citizens who have recently been to China and are working to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan.


Second confirmed case of the virus reported in India

On Sunday, Kerala reported the second case of the country's new coronavirus, with a male student from a university in Wuhan admitted to the hospital of the medical school of Alappuzha positive for the virus. The first case, that of a medical student who is in treatment, was reported in Thrissur on Thursday.


India transports 323 more Indians of the Wuhan virus by plane

A second Air India flight with 323 Indians and seven Maldives from Wuhan in China landed at the Delhi airport on Sunday morning. On the first flight early Saturday, 324 Indians were evacuated and were admitted to the two quarantine facilities established by the Army and the ITBP, although none of them tested positive for the new coronavirus.


Chinese stock markets plummet

Chinese stock and commodity markets fell sharply at the opening on Monday, in the first trading session after an extended recess of the Lunar New Year, as investors abandoned risky assets in response to growing fears about the spread of a New virus in China. The central bank of China said it will inject 1.2 billion yuan ($ 173.81 billion) of liquidity into the markets through reverted repos operations on Monday, after promising to provide monetary and credit support to companies struggling due to the virus.
