Chennai man throws slipper at Periyar's statue, held

CHENNAI: A man was arrested Sunday for throwing a shoe in a fire.

Police said P Narasimmalu, a 59-year-old resident, fled the place before passersby could catch him. The incident happened on Saturday.

Narasimmalu, a neighborhood worker, went for a drink at the Tasmac bar in Chintadripet. He wandered the streets and threw the shoe at the statute located at the crossroads of Anna Salai and Swami Sivananda Salai. Pedestrians heard him shout abuse, police said.

Alerted by the locals, they searched a case and arrested the man with the help of images from the CCTV camera. Narasimmalu was signed for creating discomfort in public. He was presented to a magistrate who imprisoned him in judicial custody.
