7 buyers among 9 injured in attack with grenade Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Nine people, seven of them buyers, were injured in a grenade attack by suspects in a crowd that was crowding around the weekend flea market in Srinagar It is Sunday afternoon.

Srinagar SSP Haseeb Mughal said a CRPF post in a corner of Pratap Park, a popular hangout in Lal Chowk, was possibly the main target of the attack. The grenade landed on a throng of shoppers in that section of the park. Two security personnel were among those injured by splinters. All the injured have been taken to hospital and are out of danger, Mughal said.

The sound of the explosion caused the Sunday crowd at Lal Chowk, the city's commercial center, to run non-stop, even when security forces cordoned off the area to catch the fleeing terrorists. Until late at night, no one had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The previous grenade attack by suspected terrorists within Srinagar was on January 4, when a 16-old-boy was injured in an explosion that rocked the Kawdara neighborhood. There have been several such incidents across the Valley since J&K and officially became Union Territories on October 31.
