Shaheen Bagh protest: local demonstration against the closure of Kalindi Kunj road

NEW DELHI: A group of locals on Sunday organized a demonstration near the anti-CAA protest site in Delhi, demanding the removal of the road barricades connecting Noida.

They demanded that people, who have been sitting in Dharna there for more than a month to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, clear the stretch as travelers face difficulties, police said.

Senior officers, including the Joint Commissioner of the Southern Range and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal, are in place monitoring the situation to ensure that no adverse incident occurs.

Officers are trying to negotiate with protesters and ask them to keep the peace.

Protesters, including women, raised slogans such as Jai Shree Ram, Vande Matram and Khali Karao Shaheen Bagh wallo ko.

We want the roads cleared. They (anti-CAA protesters) have been protesting for 50 days. It has caused us discomfort. Our children have not been able to go to school because the roads are blocked, said Rekha Devi, a resident of Jasola.

Around 52 people have been arrested. They will be released shortly, police said.

Deepak Patel, a resident of Jasola, said he somehow managed to go to work after crossing the area.

With strong barricades, the police do not allow us to enter the protest site where women have been sitting for more than a month. Somehow I managed to go to work across the area. But since yesterday, strict controls have been made and we were not allowed to go through the stretch without showing an identity card, Patel said.

On Saturday, a 25-year-old man shot two bullets in the air at Shaheen Bagh and then was arrested.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Rekha Khanna, another protester, said they want the road cleared as soon as possible.

50 days have passed. My husband works in Noida and my children also go to school on the same route.

We want the road cleared as soon as possible. We only came here to protest for a day and we are asked to disperse from here. But those who protest in Shaheen Bagh are not even asked to vacate. At least they should open one side of the road. Khanna added.
