Government to corporateize, list at least one main port
The government will corporatize at least one major port and include it in the list while efforts are being made to use technology to improve the performance of the ports, said the finance minister. She said it is necessary to establish a governance framework in line with global benchmarks.
The sources said that two large ports owned by the central government, and Deendayal Port Trust, have been shortlisted to be corporatized.
The shipping ministry is already preparing a change of law to convert the port trusts, which administer them, into port authorities and it is likely that the Port Authorities Bill will be presented during the current Budget Session. The announcement of the FM could trigger a new confrontation between the government and the port unions.
In the Budget speech, the FM also announced that Jal Vikas Marg in National Waterway-1 ( Bargain ) will be completed and Dhubri-Sadiya connectivity of 890 km in Assam will be achieved by 2022.
