Hope that Mirabai Chanu wins the Olympic medal: Karnam Malleswari

NEW DELHI: Karnam Malleswari He made history in 2000 when he became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, achieving bronze in weightlifting (69 kg category) at the Sydney Games. Malleswari, who won two gold medals in the World Championship, hopes Mirabai Chanu to be on the podium on the Tokyo Olympics .

I am expecting Mirabai Chanu to perform very well at the Olympics this year. She learned a lot at the last Olympics, and I am sure she will win a medal this year, said the 44-year-old.

After successfully organizing the Khelo India Youth Games in January, the Indian government decided to organize the Khelo India University Games in Bhubaneswar from February 22 to March 1, 2020. Malleswari believes that Indian athletes will improve if they play more tournaments.

The more tournaments the athletes participate, the better it will be for them. When we trained, we used to work hard all year and participate in a single national championship and an international championship. In case we couldn't. It didn't work well in those one or two competitions, so all our hard work was useless. Therefore, the Khelo India University Games will definitely help athletes grow in the country, Malleswari said.

Mirabai Chanu clinched gold at the World Championships in 2017 and the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Malleswari said the international exhibition for youth weightlifters in India has helped them become better athletes.

Now there are many competitions for weightlifters in India. There are competitions for lifting weights youth, youth and seniors. When we were in the junior category, we didn't go to any international tournament. Now athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Youth Olympic Games as well. In the last ten years alone, youth athletes from India have begun to participate in international tournaments. Therefore, this exhibition has helped Indian weightlifters grow in India, Malleswari concluded.
