Nirbhaya's third convict files petition for mercy before the president
NEW DELHI: A death row in the case of rape and group murder in Nirbhaya filed a petition on Saturday with the President of India.
Thakur has become the third convict in the case to file a petition for mercy with the President.
So far, the president has rejected the mercy requests of the damned Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh on the matter.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court was suspended on Friday until the execution, which was scheduled for February 1, of the four convicted in the case is ordered.
A Delhi court had previously issued a death sentence for convicts: Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, for execution on February 1.
The case concerns the group rape and the brutalization of a 23-year-old paramedic student in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012, by six people, including a minor in Delhi. The woman had died in a hospital in Singapore a few days later.
Apparently, one of the five accused adults, Ram Singh, committed suicide in Tihar prison during the trial of the case.
