The Finance Minister proposes Kisan Rail in PPP mode so that the cold supply chain transports perishable products

NEW DELHI: The Finance Minister on Saturday proposed establishing the railroad in public-private partnership (PPP) mode so that the cold chain transports perishable goods.

In presenting its second Union budget, Sitharaman announced a series of measures for the benefit of farmers.

To build a national cold supply chain without interruptions for perishable products, Kisan Rail will be installed through the PPP model so that perishable products can be transported quickly, he said.

He also said that refrigerated vans on freight and express mail trains selected to transport perishable cargo were also on the anvil.

Live plus Perishable products such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, meat should be transported in temperature controlled trucks to travel long distances.

The proposal to use refrigerated parcel vans to transport perishable products was announced by the then Minister of Railways. Mamata Banerjee in the 2009-10 budget, however, it could not take off.
