Union budget: Nirmala Sitharaman pays tribute to Arun Jaitley

NEW DELHI: The Union finance minister on Saturday paid tribute to Arun Jaitley while presenting his second Union Budget 2020 at the Lok Sabha. Former finance minister Jaitley died last year at the age of 66.

Lawyer by profession, Jaitley was the most important leader in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first term and acted as the main problem solver of the government, especially during the crucial moments of demonetization and deployment of GST (goods and services tax ).

He became finance minister in 2014 when BJP, led by Narendra Modi, came to power. He was also briefly in charge of the ministries of defense and information and broadcasting.

It was the key force behind a series of government initiatives, such as the establishment of the monetary policy committee, the liberalization of the direct foreign investment framework and the abolition of the Board for the Promotion of Foreign Investment.

Live plus As FM, Jaitley led some of the far-reaching reforms, such as the goods and services tax (GST) and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. It was said that his patient negotiations with the states were key to secure his agreement to guarantee the launch of GST in July 2017.
