Raunak-Raghav pocket bombing combines gold in Gibraltar chess

NAGPUR: Two years after having paired with a Canadian veteran to win the gold medal in a single event of the shortest format, Raunak Sadhwani scored another high on Gibraltar International Chess Festival.

Combining well with an Indian partner Raghav Srivathsav, the only one in the city Grandmaster Raunak He brought home a yellow metal at the blitz couples event, played in a unique format with a fellow Elo minor.

In the day long meet of six rounds at Gibraltar, the Indian Tigers duo of Raunak-Raghav remained unbeaten and recorded victories in five rounds before settling for a draw in the final essay. For their finish on top of the table, the Indian pair recorded victories over couple of pairs from India, Spain and over higher rated masters from Russia, Germany and Serbia.

After beating Krishna CRG of India and Ravi Teja S, Raunak, 14, beat Russian FM De Abreu Roberto in the third round. In the next round, Raunak surprised Spanish general manager Santos Latasa Jaime before doing light work for FM Carrascoso Morales Abel, also from Spain.

With an advantage to win the title, both Indian players signed a truce in the final round. While Raunak played a quick draw with the German IM Paehtz Elisabeth , Raghav drew his final round contest with WGM Serbian Dimitrijevic Aleksandra .

In the final qualification cross table, the Indian Tigers finished at the top of the table collecting 11 points for the gold. They were followed by the Spanish couple Abel and Rubén with 10 points.
