BLESSED (Australia): Prajnesh Gunneswaran made a winning start for the 2020 season but Ramkumar Ramanathan left the Apis Canberra International after a loss in the first round on Monday.

Prajnesh, India's best-ranked singles player with 122, knocked down local wildcard Jason Kubler 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the $ 162480 ATP Challenger event.

Prajnesh broke his rival four times and dropped his own service twice in the competition.

I served quite well but was a little rusty at the beginning. Then I started. It was a good day. I created many opportunities and converted enough break points to end comfortably, Prajnesh said.

I should have won the second set 4-1, but he did well and also decreased the intensity a bit. I still have some wrist problems, but I could play with him. I have not fully recovered from the tendonitis I had gotten into. China by the end of the year, he added.

Prajnesh will face the 13th Japanese seed Taro Daniel , in position 106.

However, Ramkumar had to endure a 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 loss in the first round against Finland Emil Ruusuvuori in a contest that lasted one hour and 27 minutes.

The Indian could convert only one of the four rest opportunities he won.
