Nitish Rana, pacemakers put Delhi at the top against Punjab

Mohali, January 5 () Nitish Rana made a sandy 92 before the pacemakers cut Punjab to 44 by four in his second inning to put Delhi in a solid position on day three of his Ranji Trophy game here on Sunday.

Not many gave Delhi the opportunity for the leaders of the table, Punjab, to enter the party, but the squad led by Dhruv Shorey has improved their game.

After Shorey's 96 on the second day, Rana (92 of 189) batted sensibly with Jonty Sidhu (41) to beat 313 in the first Punjab in Delhi.

Lalit Yadav (39) also made a crucial lower order contribution when Delhi finished its first entry in 339.

After an energetic demonstration with the bat, the pacemakers extended the advantage of Delhi, especially the young Simarjeet Singh, who continues to impress in his second season of first class.

He removed Sanvir Singh (11) before removing the Gurkeerat Singh Mann in form (15).

Starter Shubman Gill (4), who courted the controversy in the first innings when arguing with the referee on the field, failed for the second time in the game. The Indian hitter was fired by Subodh Bhati in the third.

The captain of the Punjab and the top scorer of the first inning, Mandeep Singh, was in the middle with 8 when the stumps were removed. Punjab leads with only 18 races on day four.

Brief scores: Punjab 313 and 44/4 in 13 overs against Delhi 339 in 115.5 overs (Shorey 96, Frog 92; Markande 3/77). BS AT
