Plaza takes Churchill to first place in the I-League

Margao, January 4 () The prolific Trinidadian Willis Deon Plaza headed home a 90-minute winner to guide the victory of Chruchill Brothers 1-0 over East Bengal (QEB) that led them to the top of the points table of the I-League, here on Saturday.

Churchill now has three victories in four games, while the Calcutta-based team fell to third place with eight points out of five.

The game seemed winding towards a draw, but Plaza hit his fourth of the season after approaching at least three times at the beginning of the game.

Churchill's Portuguese coach Fernando Tavares made great changes just like his Spanish counterpart Alejandro Menéndez García.

East Bengal was playing after a long three-week break, but Churchill's previous outing was a last-minute heartbreaking defeat against the Indian Arrows.

Visitors obtained five corners compared to Churchill's in the first half hour. The referee also had a busy half who had to show his card up to three times. He finished with a Plaza flash, but the score remained goalless.

Plaza tried to break the deadlock in the 62nd minute, but failed closely, two minutes later, hit the crossbar.

It was Bengal's turn to return the blow with Crespi's crispy right foot hitting the Churchill bar in the 85th minute and Espada, a minute later, the goal of a Colado dismissal failed. Finally, a measured crossing of the super submarine Israil Gurung, who arrived at the end of the second half, found a Stalking Square that hit her at home beyond a Lalthuammawia Ralte in a tailspin to abolish the undefeated Red&Gold race.
