Sonam Malik stuns Sakshi Malik in tests
LUCKNOW: twice world champion of cadets Sonam malik stunned Rio Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik while another promising junior Anshu Malik knocked out World Championship medalist Pooja Dhanda to seal their places in the Indian team for the Asian Championship on Saturday.
Faced with heavyweights in their respective first round, both Sonam and Anshu worried little about reputation, fighting without fear.
Sonam was behind 4-6 in the second period, but produced a sensational four-point pitch with only three seconds left in the match to put it 10-10 and win with the criteria of scoring the last point.
He then defeated Radhika 4-1 in the final to seal his place in the Indian team in the 62 kg category.
Coming from a small town of Madina in Honeana's Sonepat, Sonam is trained by Ajmer Malik in Gohana.
Anshu, who trains with Jagdeesh, knocked down Pooja and then Mansi in the 57 kg final.
There were no surprises in other categories with Vinesh Phogat (53kg) and Divya Kakran (68kg) easily winning in their respective bouts.
Nirmala Devi (50 kg) and Kiran Godara (76 kg) were other fighters to win the tests.
The winners will compete in the first qualifying series of the event in Rome (from January 15 to 18) followed by the Asian Championships in New Delhi (from February 18 to 23) and if they can win medals in these two events, they will represent India in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, which will be held in Xian from March 27 to 29.
