Jakarta floods the death toll increases to 53

JAKARTA: Indonesian authorities have increased the death toll due to flooding in the Jakarta 53 metropolitan area, where thousands of people have had to be evacuated.

The recent 10 victims were located in Lembak, and cities located on the outskirts of the capital, said the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNBP), adding that one person was missing, reports Efe.

More than 170,000 people continue to remain in temporary shelters in Jakarta 's metropolitan area where some 30 million people live and which still has many areas waterlogged.

In other areas, the receding waters have left debris and vehicles stacked on the roads, as seen in the images shared on social networks.

Most of the victims died when they were swept away by floods or buried in landslides due to heavy rains that caused the overflow of the waterways that cross the capital.

Floods and landslides affect Indonesia annually during the rainy season, which peaks between December and February.
