Ranji Trophy: Shubman Gill argues with the referee to reverse the call
MOHALI: Some children from the school arrived at the PCA stadium here on a cold Friday morning to see the coming sensation Shubman gill bat on the first day of Punjab Ranji Trophy I meet against Delhi.
Instead, they saw the 20-year-old enter into an awkward confrontation with the referees. In the fourth ball of the tenth, Shubman was caught behind midfielder Subodh Bhati. Gill refused to walk and instead had a heated argument with referee Mohammed Rafi (making his debut) at the end of the bowling alley.
Rafi then consulted the square leg referee Paschim Pathak and reversed his decision. Going for the vice captain of Delhi Nitish Frog In the conversation with coach KP Bhaskar, Gill allegedly abused the referee. Referee of Mr. ko gaali de raha hai (He's abusing the referee), Rana was heard telling Bhaskar.
The incident did not go well in the Delhi camp. The players were visibly agitated by Shubman's behavior. The game resumed after 12 minutes after the match referee P Ranganathan intervened. With the incident playing in his mind, Gill lost focus and beat Simarjeet Singh with wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat to be 23 with the team's score at 60. This time he went with his head down. Punjab ended the day at 266/8.
Gill will lead India 'A' in both games of the tour and three one-day games in New Zealand and is also part of the India 'A' team for two four-day games, before the team plays five T20I, three ODI and two Tests as of January 24. Gill has been part of the Testing team in the last two home series.
"This is quite unacceptable. If someone is playing for India it doesn't mean that he has got the right to intimidate an umpire. Showing dissent is a different thing but trying to intimidate an on-field umpire is way over the top. He should be charged with level II offence for his conduct. This is Ranji Trophy , not a joke," Bhaskar told TOI after the day's play. Punjab coach Munish Bali refused to make any comment.
A PCA official tried to explain the side of Shubman's story. Initially it was not delivered and he was looking at the floor. Suddenly he saw everyone celebrating around him. It arrived. This is the second incident in the last three games in which it was wrongly given. He really regrets his behavior, he said. When using abusive language towards the referee, the official said: He did not use any swear words. Yes, he lost his temper but did not abuse.
TOI has learnt that match referee had a word with Shubman gill and Delhi's captain Dhruv Shorey after the match. The Delhi team has decided not to lodge an official complaint against Gill.
