Chennai City FC sells Pedro Manzi to the Japanese club
CHENNAI: defending champions Chennai City FC ( CCFC ) are ready to release their best striker Pedro Manzi in the January transfer window. It was learned that the Spanish striker is likely to join a Japanese second division club. An official announcement will be made in the coming days.
A source confirmed the development even though he didn’t reveal the name of the Japanese club. “CCFC have come to an understanding with the Japanese club after they were offered a very good deal. Manzi is also okay with the move as it will present him with a fresh challenge. The decision was taken after consulting with CCFC coach Akbar Nawas, ”the source told TOI on Thursday.
Manzi played a crucial role in Chennai City’s title triumph last season as he led the attack with flair. He was the joint top scorer with 21 goals and was a constant threat to opposition defense. Following his successful season, a lot of ISL clubs too had approached CCFC to buy the player.
The forward also showed signs of his dazzling form this season before injuring himself last month with lateral tension. “He is now fit and ready to join the practice. But the offer was too good to refuse, ”said the source.
It was also said that the club does not seek the replacement of Manzi immediately. “The coach is in Singapore during the break. Once I return, we will look for a replacement, ”the source said.
CCFC are currently placed eighth in the I-League table with five points of five games. Their next match will be for Gokulam Kerala on January 9, as they begin their AFC Cup campaign against Al Riffa of Bahrain on January 14.
