Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu ranked eighth in the last Olympic qualifications

NEW DELHI: On the way to sealing a place for the Tokyo Games, former world champion Mirabai Chanu maintained its eighth place in the Olympic qualifying list published by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on Thursday.

In the race for Olympic qualification , 25, who competes in the 49 kg category, has accumulated 2966.6406 ranking points so far.

To qualify for Tokyo, a weightlifter must compete in at least one event in each of the three six-month periods (from November 2018 to April 2020), at least six events in general and in at least one event of Gold and silver level.

Ranking points are based on the number of events in which a lifter participates and Mirabai has missed some competitions, including the World Championship in 2018, due to his back injury, national coach Vijay Sharma told PTI.

But being eighth now is not a problem, since after the list of final rankings is made in April, the best results will be taken into account, he added.

After recovering from a back injury, which spoiled his progress in 2018, Chanu has constantly improved his performance in 2019. He lifted 86 kg at start and a personal maximum of 113 kg in clean and tug for a total of 199 kg in the Asian Championship last April. year to lose the bronze medal for a mustache.

His best performance came at the World Championship in September, when Manipuri broke the long-awaited 200 kg mark by lifting his best personal mark in all three sections. At boot, he lifted 87 kg, followed by 114 kg in clean and pull for a total of 201 kg.

However, Chanu ended the year with a bittersweet note when he won gold at the Qatar International Cup, an event of Olympic level silver qualification, but his 194 kg effort was well below his personal best.

The last qualifying classifications have three Chinese weightlifters in the top five. The current world champion and world record holder Hou Zhihui (4703.1982) tops the list, while Jiang Huihua (4667.8878) and Zhang Rong (3837.8294) occupy second and fourth place respectively.

However, only one of the three Chinese lifters will compete in the Olympic Games, as a nation cannot send more than one athlete per weight category.

North Korea's Song Gum is placed third with 4209,4909 points.

The fifth, sixth and seventh positions are occupied by Delacruz Jourdan Elizabeth (184 kg) of the USA. UU., Aisah Windy Cantika of Indonesia (190 kg) and Segura Ana Iris (188 kg) of Colombia. The three, along with Rong (199 kg), have better personal results than those of Chanu (201 kg).
