Thomas is ready to play in the first event of the PGA Tour of 2020

Los Angeles, January 2 (AFP) Justin Thomas' full game has made him one of the best players on the PGA Tour and the American will try to bring that momentum to this week's Champions Tournament, the first event of 2020.

Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm are the protagonists of the event when the tour returns from a December parenthesis at the Par-73 Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The course, which consists only of those who won on the tour last year, includes only 34 golfers after several notable winners decided to skip the event without court.

Brooks Koepka, the top-ranked, is out for a left knee injury, while Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods also qualified but chose not to play, as did Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari and the British Open champion Shane Lowry

That sets the stage for Thomas to take advantage. Thomas said his goal for 2020 is to return to the world number one ranking.

All the motivation I need to reach the world number one is in me, he said.

I don't need to try to prove that someone is wrong.

I don't need to do it because people say I can't. Because I want to be there is a motivation big enough for me. Thomas, 26, one of the only 10 players in PGA history to launch a sub-60 round, won the BMW Championship in August, finished fourth at the Safeway Open in September and won the CJ Cup in October.

Thomas also did well in the Presidents Cup in Australia last month, ending with a 3-1-1 record, his defeat in the singles competition.

The winner of the 2017 PGA Championship, Thomas has a burning desire to organize a full season and start strong after last year he was interrupted by a persistent right wrist injury.

Yes, it could have been a shame party and asked for more attention, but it definitely didn't deserve anything special, said Thomas, who has qualified for this event four of the past five years. I mean, I hadn't done what I had done the previous year and definitely not two years before.

Even when the injury occurred, I tried to stay patient and was glad to see how he was recovering at the end of the year.

Thomas will have competition from world number three Rahm, who is the best ranked player on the field.

The Spanish Rahm has three victories and 10 top 10 in his last 13 starts worldwide, which led him to a high ranking in his career.

Johnson is making his first start of the 2019-20 season and has seven consecutive results in the top 10 at the event. Defending champion Xander Schauffele overcame a five-shot deficit by entering the final round last year by posting a 62 tournament record on Sunday. He is trying to become the first player since Geoff Ogilvy (2009-10) to repeat as champion. (AFP) APA APA
