Maruti Suzuki India records a 2.4% increase in car sales in December

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India On Wednesday it reported a 2.4 percent increase in car sales in the domestic market during December, as the increased demand for compact models such as New WagonR offset a decline in small cars.

In a regulatory presentation, Maruti said it sold 124,375 vehicles in the domestic market in December compared to 121,479 vehicles sold in the same month of the previous year.

After including exports and sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the company recorded a 3.9 percent increase in sales to 133,296 vehicles.

Its popular models as Alto, which the company classifies as 'mini' cars, saw sales drop 13.6 percent to 23,883 pieces. This was more than offset by a nearly 28 percent increase in their 'Compact' category cars like New WagonR, Swift, Celerio and Dzire to 65,673.

The medium-sized Ciaz experienced a 62.3 percent drop in sales to 1,786, while utility vehicles such as Gypsy and Ertiga recorded a 17.7 percent increase to 23,808.

During April-December, Maruti said its domestic sales fell about 17 percent to 1.1 million units.
