The WTO appeal body becomes dysfunctional

New Delhi, December 10 () The WTO dispute resolution mechanism will be affected with the departure of two of the three judges from its appeal body after the end of its mandate on Tuesday.

The United States has stalled the appointments of members in the appeal body of the WTO dispute settlement system.

WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo said Monday at a meeting of all WTO members that he would launch more intensive and high-level consultations on how to resolve the long-standing stalemate on the appointment of members of the appeal body .

His intervention came after members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) were unable to reach a consensus on a proposal to address concerns about the functioning of the appeal body.

The appeal body will no longer be in a position to consider new appeals after December 10 and will have a negative impact on its dispute settlement system and also on the multilateral trading system as a whole.

India has several critical trade disputes currently pending in the WTO. For India, the focus will now be firmly on regional trade agreements such as ASEAN, said Rohan Shah, Representative and Governor of India at the board of the Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia. He said while commenting on the subject. He noted that India will seek to seek bilateral agreements with the United States and the EU. RSN NKD CS ABM
