Unnao girl dies after 40 hours of battle for life

LUCKNOW/UNNAO: The group rape survivor who was stabbed and set on fire on Thursday died at 11.40 p.m. Friday after a cardiac arrest, a spokesman said.

Earlier, addressing mediators outside the hospital, her brother had said: When I hugged my sister yesterday, she told me only one thing: Save me, I don't want to die. But make sure they (the attackers) are not saved. They must hang. I assured him that no one will be saved.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old Unnao woman was headed to meet with her lawyers in Rae Bareli when she was attacked by five men, including two accused of raping her in December. They beat her with sticks, stabbed her repeatedly, set her on fire and ran screaming for help in a fireball.

When she was rescued, she had suffered 90% burns. After being transferred from Unnao to Kanpur to Lucknow, she was finally transferred by plane to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment.

Referring to the Hyderabad meeting, his brother said he expected his sister to have quick justice. “What happened in Hyderabad was correct. I also want immediate justice for my sister, and not let the case continue for two or three years and then see the attackers walking free, ”he said.
