Manish Kaushik and Vikas Krishan enter boxing semifinals at SAG

KATHMANDU: World Championship bronze medalist Manish Kaushik (64 kg) and Commonwealth Games champion Vikas Krishan (69 kg) reached the semifinals on the first day of the boxing event in 13 South Asia Games on Friday.

National champion Ankit Khatana (75 kg) was the third Indian to advance to the last four when he knocked out a local boy Deepak Shrestha in the first round of his fight.

Manish thoroughly dominated his quarterfinal fight against Pakistan's Suleman Baloch to record a 5-0 victory.

In the quarterfinals of 69 kg, Vikas marked his return to the amateur circuit after an interval of 15 months with an excellent performance against Dorji Tshering of Bhutan in a unanimous verdict.

In the women's category, Sonia Lather (57 kg) had an easy start against Shamima Akter from Bangladesh, as she won through RSC in the third round.

The young boxer S Kalaivani showed his attack skill from the start, throwing a series of attack punches on Rabia Batool of Pakistan when the referee was forced to stop the competition in the first round.

Seven boxers: Vinod (49 kg), Sparsh (52 kg), Sachin (57 kg), Varinder (60 kg), Sachin (81 kg), Gaurav Chauhan (91 kg) and Narender (+ 91 kg) and four boxers: Pinki Rani (51 kg), Shiksha (54 kg), Parveen (60 kg) and Manju Bamboriya (64 kg) are already in the semifinals, which guarantees India 16 medals.

The semifinal fights will be played on December 7 and 8, followed by the finals on December 9.
