Nirbhaya case: the head of DCW urges the president to reject the declaration of mercy of one of the convicts
NEW DELHI: On Thursday, DCW chief Swati Maliwal urged the president to reject the mercy petition filed by one of the convicts in the case of gangrape and make sure the defendants are hanged before December 16, the day the brutal crime was committed seven years ago.
Maliwal will demand capital punishment for rapists within six months after his conviction entered the third day of Thursday.
Citing the incident, where five men allegedly burned a rape survivor, including two accused of raping her and the murder and murder case of the Hyderabad veterinarian, Maliwal in his letter to Kovind said the main cause of these crimes is the complete absence of fear of safe and fast punishment in the minds of criminals.

Four men, Mukesh, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh, face the gallows for the crime. The fifth defendant, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar prison in March 2013 and the sixth, a convicted minor was sentenced to three years of punishment in a renovated and released home in 2015.
Vinay had filed a petition for mercy with the president. The Delhi government had rejected the mercy petition. The file that rejects the declaration of mercy was sent by the Deputy Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal to the Ministry of Interior.
Maliwal said it is unfortunate that more than seven years have passed since the horrific rape and murder of Nirbhaya in 2012, and to date, justice has not been done.
Nirbhaya's mother is still running from pillar to pole to make sure her beloved daughter can get justice, Maliwal said.
It seems that this case has no end and the waiting for justice for Nirbhaya continues. In this regard, I urge you to kindly reject requests for mercy and ensure that the damned are hanged before December 16, he said.
He also urged Kovind to lead the Center to meet the demands of the panel.
The demands include the hanging of the rapists within six months of their sentence, the immediate hanging of the rapists of Nirbhaya, the requests for reparation of mercy with fixed terms and the increase of the police resources.
The demands also include the creation of more fast track tracks and optimal use of the. The Delhi Women's Commission has also emphasized digitizing the police force and creating software to fix police responsibility in such incidents.
