ALBANY, BAHAMAS: He is 64 years old but he is still tall. He is a sports photographer specialized in golf photography. With the camera in tow, he walks the road like a young man looking for the best angles and the best views.
His enthusiasm for the work continues without diminishing even after 38 years of high quality contribution. His numbers he has scored are gigantic: 120 Men's Big Leagues, 70 Women's Big Leagues, 19 Ryder Cups, every Solheim Cup and hundreds of other tournaments around the world!
Get together David Cannon , perhaps the best known golf photographer in the world, who is here to cover Hero world challenge . A small exhibition of some of his best golf shots is near the golf course that has been curated by a prominent golfer. Justin rose .
While Cannon takes one down the hall showing the stunning photos, he also tells TOI a lot about his life and his work.
I am from England and I am a failed golfer. I wanted to play golf seriously when I was young. I went to the same training teams where golfers like Nick Skirt and Sandy Lyle also trained. In the late 70s, I met a guy who was the photographer for Leicester City Football Club. I started sitting with his camera and got hooked to photography," Cannon, who has lived in Leicester for many years, recalled. "I got my first camera in 1978 and in 1981, I got a fulltime job in sports photography," he added. "Of all sport, golf is my favourite and at that time, Seve (Ballesteros), Bernhard Langer , Sandy Lyle were just arriving so I started off at a brilliant time. The fact that I knew some of them helped.
Cannon, who has covered 37 Masters and 38 British Open in a row, has also done a lot of football before golf consumed him. Who has been your favourite golfer? "Seve was my great favourite. Then Tiger (Woods) came on the scene and changed golf forever," Cannon, who works for Getty Images, said.
What makes Tiger so special from your point of view? Everything about him makes incredible photographs. It's his eyes ... he has amazing eyes. One of the first things I learned was to focus on the eyes as the first thing people look when they see a page is the subject's eye.
"Tiger's eyes have always been unbelievable and then he does things no other player does. He is so exciting to photograph," Cannon said, adding, "Rory (McIlroy) is the same. If he clicks, then he could have a year where he can threaten all four Majors. He is the most exciting player other than Tiger."
