Manchester United was better than us, says José Mourinho

MANCHESTER: José Mourinho acknowledged that his former Manchester United club had deserved his 2-1 Premier league victory over his new team Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday and praised the performance of Marcus Rashford .

Mourinho took over as Spurs manager last month, almost a year after United fired him.

I think they deserved the victory in their first half. We didn't start well at all, said Mourinho, whose team stayed behind a goal in the seventh minute of Rashford.

I think that during the first 30 minutes they were the best team, and I think that's why, for these strong 30 minutes we weren't there, and also because of the way we conceded the second goal, I think they deserved to win, he added.

Mourinho said the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer team, in the hands of Aston Villa and Sheffield United in their last two league games, had presented their best exhibits against the best teams.

United's results against the best teams this season have been good. Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester said.

Because of the way they play, it's easier for them. They are not afraid of having a defensive approach. It's easier for them against better teams, against teams that want more ball, he added.

The Portuguese, fired by United after two and a half seasons in charge, praised his former striker Rashford.

When he plays from the left, it is really dangerous and I knew it and gave the players the best information about it. His first goal is a typical Rashford goal that comes inside. Our boys knew it clearly, he said.

As expected, Solskjaer was even more generous in his compliments to the 22-year-old English international, who offered a real quality performance.

"It's the best he’s had under me. He was mature, strong against good Premier league players," the Norwegian said.

It's like I'm back in the playground or in the backyard. We want them to have fun, there is nothing dangerous out there: only 75.00 people who want to see the best, he said.

With some questioning of Solskjaer after the club's worst start in a season since 1988-89, the victory that led United to sixth place was a big boost.

The three points are huge for us. We've had too many draws this season and we've given too many points away from the winning positions, said Solskjaer.

We have made decisions that we had to make and we are looking to build this club to make it better again and I cannot think in the short term when I am trying to do so, he said.

When we turn the corner and win three or four games to the race, they will feel that Man United again.
