Four soldiers die in avalanche, snowstorm along LoC
NEW DELHI: In another bleak reminder of the harsh terrain and weather conditions in which unresolved border guards with Pakistan and China, four soldiers died Tuesday in avalanches and snowstorms in the Tangdhar and Gurez sectors throughout of the LoC.
Three soldiers, Rajendra Singh and Sepoys Amit and Kamal Kumar, died when an avalanche hit their post in Tangdhar, while another, Naik Akhil S S, died after his patrol was caught in a snowstorm in Gurez. “The rescue teams managed to locate and recover all the personnel trapped in the two incidents.
But despite the best efforts of the medical teams, the four soldiers succumbed to their injuries, an officer said. The incidents occur shortly after two soldiers died in an avalanche in the southern part of the ban on November 30, while four other soldiers and two civilian goalkeepers were similarly killed in the northern glacier on November 18.
More than 1,000 soldiers, including 35 officers, have lost lives in the Siachen-Saltoro Ridge glacier region since 1984, when Operation Meghdoot of India advanced to Operation Ababeel of Pakistan to occupy all dominant heights from 22,000 feet by one moustache.
