New scoring system will benefit Indian boxers: Amit Panghal
NEW DELHI: Indian boxers are often at the receiving end of controversial trials in international tournaments, especially in the last four years, when points were declared only at the end of a fight.
The scoring and evaluation system in international boxing was changed before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. To the fans' dismay and boxing fraternity, the judge system saw a barrage of scandals that almost led to the sport being kicked out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
As of 2016, the scoring was done with the traditional 10-point system, where each round was scored by five judges and a computer selected three of its scores to count. The habit of counting blows also stopped, which caused many protests since a technically superior boxer was often at the receiving end of the point system.
A new scoring system has been established for Tokyo 2020, where dozens of judges will be updated in real time. This will allow officials to see the reactions of the judges during each fight. The judges have also been warned that they could be removed from officiating in international tournaments in the future if their performance is not satisfactory.
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that referees and judges for the Olympics will be selected from the 'IOC Boxing Task Force' that will comprise of individuals who are certified by the AIBA (International Boxing Association). the IOC has promised to ensure the integrity of the sport is maintained at the highest level.
" the new judging system, where the scoring will be updated in real time on a screen, is definitely going to help boxers who are technically superior. Now that a boxer will know what the score is after every round - whether one is ahead or down - he or she will be able to strategise in the bout in real time," Amit told TOI.
the IOC has also confirmed that referees and judges who were involved in the 2016 Rio Games will not be allowed to officiate in Tokyo next year. All 36 referees and judges from the Rio Games were suspended after AIBA launched an investigation following allegations that the boxing bouts were fixed. "No referees or judges involved in the Olympic Games In Rio 2016, he will be eligible to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic boxing qualifiers or the Olympic competition, the IOC said in a recent statement.
