Varanasi rewarded for being the most suitable for the disabled

LUCKNOW: Varanasi has achieved the highest national honors for its infrastructure adapted for the disabled.

On Tuesday, vice president Venkaiah Naidu awarded the prize to the additional secretary in chief of UP, Mahesh Gupta, who also heads the department for disabled people, for doing a commendable job towards the rehabilitation of people with disabilities in the state.

While the Prime Minister's electorate won the best job award for people with different abilities in all districts, the state government also won awards for having the best website adapted for the disabled and the implementation of rehabilitation services for people with different abilities In the whole state.

Gupta said his department had developed a website adapted for the disabled that could work on voice recognition for those who cannot handle the mouse or keyboard. He said the state government had effectively implemented Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan to provide accessible physical infrastructure and other communication facilities for people with different abilities.

On the Sugamya website, screen reader software has been used for people with visual impairment, he said.
