UP boys will be captain, deputy of the U-19 World Cup team in India

MEERUT: The UP boys have been named the captain and vice-captain of the U19 cricket team bound for the World Cup.

Priyam Garg de Meerut will lead the team in the tournament in South Africa in January. Dhruv Horse mackerel Agra will be the vice-captain. This is the first time that the children of the state have been appointed captain and vice-captain of any national cricket team.

Another Meerut boy, Kartik Tyagi, is also part of the team. In addition, Bhadhoi's wonder boy, Yashashvi Jaiswal, who plays in Mumbai, has also found a berth. He recently broke a 45-year record to become the youngest hitter to score a double century in a division A game. The team was announced by BCCI in Mumbai.

Garg, a right-handed hitter who is also a key member of the UP Ranji team, dedicated this appointment to his mother who passed away eight years ago. It was his dream to see me succeed in cricket, he told TOI by phone. His father, Naresh Garg, drives taxis for a living.

Garg started playing cricket at the age of eight. Initially, his participation in the sport bothered his parents who wanted him to concentrate on his studies. Cricket is a highly competitive game and my parents were reluctant to send me to an academy. But when I started showing promises, they yielded and backed me completely, Garg said.

I had limited means, but after seeing the promise he showed in the field, I decided to do everything possible to provide him with the best facilities. Before, I was driving a taxi, but after Priyam's selection in Ranji a couple of years ago, things have improved substantially, said Father Naresh.

The horse mackerel is an explosive wicketkeeper-batsman. He has performed consistently well since he reached division A. In 2017, during a college game, he scored a century in just 21 balls.
