17 dead after the collapse of the wall in the village of Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains

COIMBATORE: Seventeen people, including three children, were buried alive while they slept after a compound wall weakened by the days of incessant rain collapsed in four houses with a tiled roof in the Adi Dravidar colony in the village of Nadoor, near Mettupalayam , about 40 km from Coimbatore, early Monday. .

Local residents organized protests demanding the arrest of the man who built the 20-foot-high wall around his palatial home. They said S Sivasubramaniam, owner of a textile showroom, had ignored repeated requests to strengthen the wall. The stone blocks along a 50-foot long section of the wall collapsed on the houses that were built in its shadow, trapping people sleeping inside. Fire and rescue personnel, alerted by the locals, arrived at the scene in half an hour, but could not save them. It took two hours to clean the debris and recover the bodies.

I heard a deafening sound around 5 am. When I ran out of my house to see what was going on, all I could see was piles of rubble where the houses were, said Ramasamy, 70, who lives nearby.
